Does Canada’s Food Guide Promote Weight Gain?

The University of Ottawa Canadian Obesity Network Student and New Professionals chapter recently hosted a public debate entitled “Does Canada’s Food Guide promote weight gain?” The debaters, Drs. Yoni Freedhoff and Hasan Hutchinson spoke to the perils and merits of Canada’s food guide in front of a packed audience of over 100 young researchers, graduate and medical students, community members, new professionals and anyone with an interest in healthy eating. There is some controversy surrounding the food guide and its relationship to obesity among health professionals and the lay public alike. While both Drs. Freedhoff and Hutchinson presented valid arguments on either side, one point of agreement was clear – the important thing is that we are as Canadians are having debates like this in the first place.
