Drs. Ferraro and Adamo and “Newly Crowned” PhD Candidate Allana Leblanc Highlight Child Obesity Prevention Strategies to Community Health Workers

On Wednesday, November 27th, Dr. Kristi Adamo and PhD candidate Allana Leblanc highlighted several strategies to help prevent and manage obesity to a group of community health workers and front line service providers. Dr. Ferraro facilitated and also made a presentation at this workshop that was part of a Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario funded Spark Grant symposium. The purpose, to bring academics, care providers and experts in the field together for an interactive workshop on standardizing key messages directed towards women and families in the preconception and prenatal period and those parenting children 0-3. Our goal, to harmonize messaging delivered patients in the Ottawa region in an attempt to reduce the problems associated with child overweight and limit inconsistencies in messaging to increase efficient uptake. Drs. Ferraro and Chaput Take HALO’s Message to Brazil Forging an International Collaboration

From November 20-22, Drs. Zach Ferraro and JP Chaput participated in the 4th International Congress on Sport Pedagogy in Maringá, Brazil. They were invited by friend and colleague Professor Nelson Nardo Jr who recently completed post-doctoral training at the University of Ottawa. In addition to their presentations (see below for citation details), Zach and JP met several researchers and administrators from the Universidade Estadual de Maringá and are now working to finalize a formal partnership between institutions. HALO research associate Dr. Zach Ferraro gave a presentation at Obstetric Medicine Rounds at the Ottawa Hospital highlighting strategies to help care providers and patients trouble shoot weight-related hurdles throughout pregnancy. About HALO

The Healthy Active Living and Obesity Research Group (HALO) was established in 2007 in response to the escalating obesity crisis and the increasing complexity of related co-morbidities. Today the HALO team consists of 17 staff (including 6 researchers), a childhood obesity clinical team (Centre for Healthy Active Living), 17 graduate students, and many community volunteers. Since its inception in 2007, HALO has received over $12 million in research funding; produced more than 520 peer-reviewed publications; has given more than 980 scholarly presentations locally, nationally and internationally; and secured more than 1.3 billion media impressions!
