Congratulations to Dr. Diego Silva and Dr. Mark Tremblay on their recent publication “Health-related physical fitness in children and adolescents and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: Signals of convergence” just published in the Journal of Sport and Health Sciences!

In this opinion piece, the authors analyze how the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) systems perspective are directly applicable to health-related physical fitness. Improvements in fitness among children and adolescents can simultaneously functions as a determinant and an outcome, contributing to better health, enhanced educational outcomes, gender equity, environment sustainability and stronger institutions. This exploratory report outlines the theoretical rationale linking SDGs to health-related physical fitness in children and adolescents and examines whether countries performing better on SDG targets also exhibited better youth fitness performance during the COVID-19 pandemic.
