HALO PhD candidate Hugues Sampasa-Kanyinga and HALO Scientist Dr. Jean-Philippe Chaput are among the authors on a paper, “Correlates of nonmedical use of prescription opioids among a cohort of adolescents in Ontario, Canada,” that was recently published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research.
They found the prevalence of nonmedical use of prescription opioids to be 10.7% among adolescents in Ontario, with a higher prevalence in black, South Asian and other ethnic backgrounds, those coming from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, those with lower parental support and lower academic performance, those that meet the physical activity guidelines, those that consume energy drinks, and those that smoke cigarettes and use cannabis. These findings can help inform intervention programs in this population.
