Last Spring CHEO received news from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care that two funding proposals had been approved to move forward – the creation of an outpatient intervention program for treatment of complex, severe obesity as well as an expansion of services for children and youth with Type II Diabetes. This new centre will be located at Bank and Riverside, and the intake of patients will start in November.

The Obesity stream will provide interdisciplinary, tertiary care treatment for children and youth with complex severe obesity, including patient assessment, group-based outpatient treatment, and pre- and post-operative medical care for bariatric surgery patients and their families.

The expanded Type II Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) services will better identify and address the needs of children with undiagnosed T2DM and pre-diabetes and improve outcomes for children already diagnosed with T2DM. This will be done through the following initiatives:

  • Family-based screening and surveillance program across the Champlain LHIN
  • Family education program on prevention of T2DM in children/youth – targeted to parents with T2DM
  • Family-based T2DM treatment program delivered through the Centre for Healthy Active Living and community partners across the LHIN
