Dr. Jean-Philippe Chaput and HALO alumnus Greg Traversy wrote a blog post, “Should Obese Individuals Move More than their Lean Counterparts?” that was recently published on the World Obesity Federation website.
From the post:
“They wouldn’t be so big if they just got off the couch.” If you’ve ever heard someone saying something similar to this you are not alone. This discriminatory bias against those with excess weight is not only widespread among the lay public but also among health professionals – even those in regular contact with patients with obesity1. Such an insensitive statement not only serves to stigmatize those living with overweight/obesity, but is it even factually correct? Is a lack of physical activity or ‘laziness’ really what’s separating overweight or obese individuals from their ‘normal’ or ‘healthy’ weight counterparts?
