Dr. Katie Gunnell and her colleagues recently published an article in Health Psychology titled, “A tale of two models: changes in psychological need satisfaction and physical activity over 3 years“. Overall, they found that adolescents’ psychological needs to feel competent, autonomous, and related to others in physical activity contexts decreased over three years. They also found that (a) increases in these three psychological needs predicted increases in physical activity and (b) increases in physical activity predicted increases in psychological needs.
