The Healthy Active Living and Obesity (HALO) Research Group at the CHEO Research Institute, and the University of Ottawa’s Chapter of the Canadian Obesity Network Student And New Professionals group are hosting a FREE Café Scientifique entitled: “Is Obesity a Disease?”. The debate will feature discussion by Dr. Arya Sharma and Dr. Jacqui Gingras, two well-known obesity experts. The event will be moderated by Dr. Mark Tremblay, Director of the HALO Research Group.

Dr. Sharma is the Scientific Director of the Canadian Obesity Network and an international expert on clinical weight management, and will argue that obesity should be viewed as a medical condition Dr. Gingras is an assistant professor in the School of Nutrition at Ryerson University and is a well-known advocate of the Health at Every Size approach to body weight. She will argue that treating obesity as a disease does more harm than good.

The debate is being held on June 7th from 7:30- 9:30pm at the Richelieu-Vanier Community Centre (300 des Pères-Blancs Avenue, Ottawa, ON K1L 7L5) and everyone is invited to attend. The debate itself sure to be interesting, but this is also a great opportunity to for anyone else who’d like to host a CIHR Café Scientifique one day to see this format unfold.

We would like to thank the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Canadian Obesity Network for funding this Café Scientifique event.
